I always fasten the strap on my helmet!! Yes a windshield is worth it. I have a shorty that I acually look over. However you need to road test, and by trial and error you can find the right position of the shield; so that the wind blows over the head and also does not lift one's shirt above one's belly button. When you find the right placement of the windshield, riding is a lot easier and you do not have to "hang on" at high speeds.
The optional Suzzuki windshield for the Savage is an excellent choice (4 point mounting). Mine came with the bike, so I do not know the price, but I think that it would be less than $200. Also there are suppliers that sell Suzuki assesories at a lower price than the dealer!
